Thread Selection

This is my second homework motif worked into a little mat. It is 4 inches (about 10 cm) square. The thread is size 20 Lizbeth "Desert Bloom". I think the motif turned out really well and makes a very nice decorative mat. However...

The thread was a severe mistake -- especially for this piece. The colors are wrong and change in odd places worked in this pattern. Purple, orange, and gray-white might make something really pretty, but I can't think what. I do believe this thread was a mistake, for me, and I won't be buying any more of it. Of course, if I had picked a different pattern to make with it, I might be feeling better about the thread.

I need to try this motif in a nice solid color and see how the mat looks.

The pattern is really pretty. Nice work. Sometimes multi-colored threads can be so challenging to work with. I agree with you that the colorway is something else. It would probably look great with just the right "something", but I don't know what, either! :)

The first Lizbeth colorway I tried I did not like in the pattern I used. It's really hard to tell sometimes how it will work out. Even so, this turned out pretty.

I definately like the motif used here, but totally agree with you on the colors. It gives it a very strange look. I'll be looking for your next version in a solid color. You might submit this motif to InTatters for the Avatar challenge. I think it would make a good avatar!

the motif is cool! the colours seem a little strange but it's unusual. marty, could we see this again in another thread?

I'm not a huge fan of orange, BUT I think the name of this thread tells you what it would look good as. It really is the colors of high desert wildflowers. So some freeform flowers, with perhaps a sagey green for the stems and leaves, would actually work really well. I agree that it does nothing for this motif, though.

I love the motif, and the size. Four inches sounds so much better than quarter-size motif for a mat or a table runner. LOL
Also had the same feeling when I used a multicolor (bubblegum). It looked pretty on the ball...it's peach, blue, soft pink...but I made an "A" and didn't like the effect. However, otherise I love the Lisbeth solid colors...
Sometimes if I want colors to fall in the right place I cut (I KNOW...GROAN)and lay in the color I want; manipulating the thread. It's time consuming though and the thread joins are painstakingly done!
