I've shown this one before too -- it's Number 4 in my 25 Motif
Challenge (
this time around). It's modified from "Ice Crystal" from Blomqvist and Persson's
Tatting Patterns and Designs. The blue ribbon on this one was a surprise -- a pleasant surprise. You see, I thought the other ornament would do better. Although I do like the red plastic ornaments better than the gold ones -- it's still a plastic ornament! It has to be the way the white really stands out on the red -- that and so many people have the idea that tatting should be white! I've decided it really IS pretty!

I just LOVE this ornament! It's GORGEOUS and looks so classic with the white thread on the red ball. I can't believe I didn't comment about it on your original post!
I am amazed how you blended duplicate motifs to fit around the ball just PERFCTLY! Thanks for showing the 'top' of the ball here. I'm still trying to figure out how you did it!
This definitely deserves a blue ribbon, but I wonder if the judges realized
that you 'created' this over-all design, and didn't just follow an ornament pattern.
I do have a question: It seems the book came out in several different versions. The one I have contains the motif instruction on page p. 43 and it's called "Star No. 3." I'm curious which book version you have. Mine is a Dover edition, published in 1988.
In any event, I never would have dreamed that one 'simple' motif would look so spectacular when repeated in this way! It's just brilliant!
